Have Questions About Engine Diagnostics & Check Engine Light?
What is engine diagnostics?

Engine diagnostics is the process of observing live data from the PCM and comparing that data to known good data or watching for fluctuations, or what we refer to as glitches, in the data stream. The infamous “CHECK ENGINE” light will only come on if there is a concern within the results that it will skew the emission standard by the government. To date, there are 1,599 such codes. If other codes have been recorded, such as transmission, body, infotainment, or ADAS codes, they will not turn on the check engine light.

Can I keep driving with the check engine light on?

Driving with the check engine light on is like refusing to acknowledge that you have a fever. It is always best to have those codes checked as quickly as possible. However, if the check engine light is blinking and then solid, then you need to have that checked as quickly as possible as it means that you are in danger of ruining your catalytic converter or converters, which is extremely expensive and it will be an additional expense on top of the reason for the light coming on to begin with.

How long does a diagnostic test take?

Many times, a diagnostic test will be completed within an hour. However, depending on the complexity of the issues on hand, it could take longer, in which case you would be made aware of it. Diagnosing is generally finding the problem but not necessarily repairing the issue.

Will diagnostics tell the exact problem?

Not necessarily. As stated above, it gives us a starting point to the issue but there are times that there are multiple reasons that a code might be set and discerning those issues can become time consuming.
